A More Accessible Future for Brain Health

For too long, cost, a shortage of specialists, and stigma have been a barrier to receiving healthcare for brain disorders. But even for those with access to care, the gold standard still remains subjective, indirect assessments based on verbal report and behavior. As a result, millions of people still lack precise answers about their brain health. For those living with conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, Alzheimer’s, or Parkinson’s disease, this can mean years without a clear understanding of what they are experiencing, or a path to better care.

Getting to those answers starts with better tools, and better tools start with better data.

One technology at the center of this work is EEG. This measurement may be unfamiliar to you, but EEG is safe, non-invasive, and has been used in hospitals and neuroscience research for over a hundred years. It records the brain’s natural electrical activity through sensors placed on the scalp. It does not image or scan the brain, nothing enters the body, and it carries no known risks.

Today, researchers are pairing EEG with artificial intelligence to study patterns in brain activity that may one day help recognize signs associated with these conditions earlier and more reliably. For that to work, and to work well, the tools need to learn from a large and diverse range of people. Brain activity varies naturally from person to person and between populations, so a tool trained mostly on one group may not serve everyone equally. That is why participants around the world matter.

This is where BetterMind comes in.

In 2023, we opened our doors in Quezon City so that Filipinos could take part in this global effort. BetterMind runs paid research sessions, and every participant adds another piece to a much larger puzzle, helping build the diverse dataset needed to develop brain-health tools that are both accurate and accessible, for Filipinos and for people everywhere. Your participation is voluntary, and the data you contribute is collected with your informed consent and handled securely, in line with data protection laws

What we do today can help build a more accessible tomorrow.
